Indigo (yard) 7 Charlotte Lane Edinburgh EH2 4QZ Tel: +44 (0)131 2205603 |
![]() |
Description: Duck spring rolls with hoisin sauce may increase the thirst but they make a good foundation for loin of lamb with green beans and port wine sauce (though watch the specials board as well). The banana pudding with toffee sauce has particular appeal and the coffee there is extra special.Maybe it's the groovy nature of the place but Indigo is blessed with much better than normal staff which, in a place like this is fundamental to the atmosphere. No wonder one of their top cocktails is called 'hot kiss'. |

Izzi 119 Lothian Road Edinburgh EH3 9AN Tel: +44 (0)131 4669888 |

| Description:
Just
when you thought there was nothing much left to add to the Edinburgh
restaurant scene along came Izzi with its happy blend of two cuisines
and a minimalist location in Edinburgh's West End. Menus for both
are vast and many of the usual suspects are on parade. But the fried
king prawn in honey lemon sauce sprinkled with minced dry fish did
appeal to me, particularly as I still mourn the passing of Bombay
duck. With the Japanese it would be easy to sing the praises of the
wide variety of imaginative sushi, all reasonably priced at around
£3 and including such delicacies as eel and hokkigai (surf
clams to you and me).Izzi claims to be the only restaurant in the
city offering teppan-yaki, a claim which has been loudly made with
no signs of any contradiction.

Thai Orchid 44 Grindlay Street Edinburgh EH3 9AP Tel: +44 (0)131 2284438 |
![]() |
Description:
Thai Orchid has a number of claims to fame, not least of which is the extraordinary range of dishes as compared with the average Thai restaurant. Every cuisine has its limitation and one does perhaps become too used to accepting the same old faces, however welcome. There is certainly no risk of that here.Located in cosy cahoots with the Lyceum Theatre it is as though some of the thespian flamboyance has crossed the road for a quick bite and forgotten to return. Waiters are clad in purple raiment, likewise tables in red cloths. The killer blow comes with the green jade walls after which it's eyes down and concentrate on the menu, scanning for those exceptional dishes. |

Yo! Sushi Unit 5, Hanover Buildings 66 Rose Street Edinburgh EH2 2NN Tel: +44 (0)131 220 6040 |
![]() |
Description:
Yo! Sushi is something of an experience rather than simply a place to eat sushi, although having said that the sushi is actually very good too. It's an interesting concept that moves on from the traditional conveyor belt sushi bars by also offering hot dishes, noodles and tempura alongside a vast array of sushi, so take a good look at what's on offer first rather then just diving straight in. Colour coded plates indicate the price of the different dishes and a plate count soon determines the bill. When it comes to ordering drinks simply attract the attention of one of the talking robot trolleys - now that's what I call different! Poland Street, London, was their first restaurant, and now boasts a bar underneath, naturally called Yo! Below; as well as a take-away and home delivery service.. |
